In a large bowl, combine the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar. Beat them together (using a hand mixer or stand mixer) for about 2 minutes. The mixture should look pale and smooth. This creates the base for a soft texture.
Add the egg, vanilla extract, and milk to the bowl. Mix until the ingredients are fully combined and the batter is smooth.
Add the flour, baking soda, and salt. Mix slowly until the white streaks of flour just disappear. Be careful not to overmix the dough at this stage, or the cookies may become tough.
Pour in the chocolate chips. Stir them in by hand using a spoon or spatula until they are evenly distributed throughout the dough.
Editors Note: We have arthritis and we use our stand mixer for this step, too. It doesn't harm anything if you don't do it by hand.
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Scoop rounded tablespoons of dough onto an ungreased baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
